Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes how onNAV LLC (“onNAV”, “we”, “us”) collects, uses, and discloses information when you visit onnav.com (the “Site”) or use our mobile applications, including onNAV Marine, onNAV Link, and onNAV SARtac (the “Apps”).
The short version: our products are built for people who work in places where connectivity, privacy, and trust matter. We collect the minimum we need to operate, we do not run third-party advertising or analytics, and we never sell personal information.
Information we collect on the Site
The Site is a static informational website. It does not use analytics, advertising trackers, or cookies. If you submit the contact form, we collect the name, organization, email address, and message you provide, solely to respond to your inquiry. Contact submissions are delivered to our mailbox by our email processor, Resend (privacy policy), and retained as ordinary business correspondence.
Information the Apps handle
The Apps are designed device-first: your operational data lives on your device and moves only where you direct it, to your team, your organization's server, or your iCloud account. We describe each category below.
Location
The Apps use your device location to display your position on the map, record tracks and trip logs, and, when you enable team features, share your position with the team or mission you have joined (blue force tracking). Background location is used only for features you turn on, such as position sharing during an active mission or anchor and track monitoring. Position reports go to the destinations you configure: your team over a mesh radio network, a TAK server you specify, your organization's backend, or Apple iCloud (CloudKit) mission sync. We do not use location for advertising or sell it to anyone.
Health data (onNAV SARtac)
With your explicit HealthKit permission, SARtac can share metrics such as heart rate and blood oxygen with your team leader for field-safety monitoring during operations. Health data is read only with your consent, is transmitted end-to-end encrypted to your team, and is never used for advertising or marketing, never sold, and never used for any purpose other than the field-safety features you enabled. You can revoke access at any time in the Health app or iOS Settings.
Messages, voice, and photos
Team messages, push-to-talk voice, and geotagged photos you capture are stored on your device and shared with the recipients you choose. Where end-to-end encryption is enabled, encryption keys are generated and held on your device, and relay infrastructure (iCloud, an onNAV-hosted backend, or your organization's server) carries only ciphertext. Traffic sent over LoRa mesh radios or to TAK servers follows the encryption configuration of that radio network or server.
Identity and accounts
The Apps work without an account. You may set a callsign or vessel name that is visible to teammates you share with. If your organization provisions backend accounts, sign-in credentials are handled by that backend's identity service; we store an authentication token on your device. Purchases and subscriptions are processed by Apple; we never receive your payment card details.
Device connections
The Apps use Bluetooth to connect to hardware you pair, such as Meshtastic LoRa radios, GPS receivers, and environmental sensors, and to form phone-to-phone mesh links with nearby team devices. Pairing data stays on your device.
Third-party services the Apps contact
- Map providers (Mapbox; privacy policy): fetching map tiles sends your IP address and the map areas requested. Offline map areas you download are cached on device.
- Weather (Apple WeatherKit, NOAA/NWS): forecast requests include the coordinates you are viewing.
- Apple iCloud/CloudKit: optional mission and data sync within your Apple account and with teammates you invite.
- Push notifications: delivered through Apple's push service.
We do not embed third-party advertising or analytics SDKs in the Apps. Crash and diagnostic data reaches us only through Apple's opt-in developer diagnostics.
How we use information
We use the information described above to operate the Site and Apps, provide the features you enable, respond to support requests, process transactions through Apple, and comply with legal obligations. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing.
Sharing
We share information only with the service providers named above acting on our behalf, with the teams and servers you yourself direct data to, and where required to comply with applicable law, respond to a subpoena or other lawful request, or protect our rights.
Retention and deletion
Data stored on your device (missions, tracks, messages, photos, logs) is under your control and can be deleted in the Apps or by removing them. Mission data synced to iCloud belongs to your Apple account and is removed when you delete the mission. For backend accounts provisioned by your organization, deletion requests go to your organization or to us at the contact below; we will delete associated server-side data unless retention is legally required. Contact-form correspondence is retained as ordinary business records.
Children
The Site and Apps are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us at the address below to request deletion.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example, the EEA or UK under the GDPR, or California under the CCPA), you may have rights to access, correct, port, or erase personal information we hold about you, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising them. We honor such requests regardless of residency where practical: contact us using the details below and we will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes to our practices or for operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. The date above shows the latest revision; material changes will be noted on this page.
